The greatest fun with painting is to experiment with different mediums and substances to produce unusual surfaces to work on. At times I use watercolours to work on a “half ground” which is highly textured, absorbent and unpredictable. This unique surface enables me to follow my feelings and paint from memory rather than dictating what I am going to paint. The results are some very subtle passages. This spontaneous approach singles me out as a landscape painter of close-ups of rock face, shapes and geological forms giving my work the feeling of a visual experience.
